Banknote Info
Japan offered 4 southern states, Kedah, Perlis, Kalantan, Tranganu that had been England territory returned to Thai sovereignty. Thai government prepared new 1 dollar banknotes that printed by The Royal Thai Survey Department to circulate in those states.
At that time, the Japanese printed banknotes were still circulated in those states so the Japanese government did not agree to change. Thai government wished to maintain a good relation with Japan and did not issue the banknotes. Until the banknote shortage occurred before the end of the war, Thai government brought them to surcharge the banknote value and issued in Thai.
The overprinted 50 baht with red ink and crossed the original value and Chinese and Malayu language with black ink made the banknotes look like in mourning. The banknotes were so-called mourning notes. Each type of banknotes had different way of overprinted.
The 50 Baht mourning banknotes type 1 were announced on 8 Febuary 1945, type 2 on 13 Febuary 1945 and type 3 on 21 Febuary 1945.
The ministry of finance later announced on 20th November 1946 to be withdrawn and were not accepted as a legal tender from 1st December 1946.
