Special notes a huge hit

           About 30,000 people queued yesterday at the Bank of Thailand to purchase 60-baht commemorative banknotes marking his Majesty the King's diamond jubilee. One million additional notes are being offered after the first series of 9.99 million was snapped up last friday. About 800,000 were reserved yesterday.

          The commemorative banknotes released for sale to mark the 60th annivesary of His Majesty the King's accession to the throne have all been snapped up by the public, according to the Bank of Thailand.

          Duengdao Sombutsiri, senior director of the Bank Management Department, said it took just a few hours to sell the 9,999,999 60-baht notes put up for sale on Friday. Of the total, nine million notes were allocated to commercial banks, 600,000 to government agencies nationwide, and 300,000 to the central bank for sale.

           Each note were sold for 100 baht, with 40% of the proceeds going to royal projects. Ms Duengdao said the central bank plan to issue more notes to satisfy public demand. Interested individuals can also make bookings with the central bank. The new notes are expected to be released for sale at the end of the month.
